Why Boarding Schools? Options To Help Troubled Youth

Why Boarding Schools? Options To Help Troubled Youth

by James Butler

Adolescence can be a turbulent time for many teenagers. Some teens get involved in risky behaviors such as promiscuous sex, drug and alcohol abuse, gang activity, or criminal mischief. Others may suffer from serious psychological problems such as suicidal thoughts. In the past several years, boarding schools for troubled teenagers have become a popular option for parents who fear that their children are out of control. But is such a school the right choice for your teenager?

Sending your child away to school in order to handle his problems is no easy decision. Your teenager will be placed in a highly structured environment where he or she will receive counseling and the opportunity to engage in personal development activities. Your family may also periodically receive counseling.

Schools for troubled teens are appropriate if your teenager struggles with serious issues such as truancy, refusal to accept authority, violence, alcohol abuse, or self-destructive behavior.

Here are some of the options you can try before looking into sending your child away to school:

Try to keep the conversation on a rational, concerned level; attempts to manipulate or excessive emotion will just cause him or her to shut down.

Many serious adolescent problems are magnified by a sense of isolation; the teenager thinks she is the only one who has ever faced certain emotions or behavioral difficulties and as a result acts out further. At a specialized school, he realizes this is not the case and can often make friends who are dealing with similar issues. This can help your teen feel that her problems are normal.

Basically, you should only send your child to a specialized school for troubled youth as a last resort. It's important to distinguish between problems serious enough to warrant professional help and other problems that are typical of adolescents. Nearly all adolescents engage in some behaviors that their parents would prefer they refrain from, such as cursing, staying out too late, or disobeying other household rules.

Troubled teenagers will only remain in the specialized environment for a limited period of time; they need to be able to function appropriately once they return home. For this reason, many schools offer counseling not just for the teenager but for the entire family. Once the teenager leaves the school environment, his family needs to be able to deal with him appropriately so that positive changes are supported and negative behaviors do not begin to recur.

Boarding schools for troubled teens serve each adolescent for a period of months or years, depending upon the parents preferences and, in some cases, court orders. If your teenager is out of control, consider these schools before he ends up with a legal record that can follow him for the rest of his life.
